The Modern Day Civil Rights Movement
In the 1950s and 1960s the Civil Rights Movement forced America to accept that every person should have equal rights and protections under the law. But for gay people, that promise has not come true. A marriage has over 1,000 benefits under the law. A civil union has just a quarter of those protections, with same sex-couples often losing critical rights like hospital visitations, shared health insurance, and Social Security benefits. As an open-minded, modern nation, we cannot stand for this blatant and institutionalized inequality.
